Inside Line wrote:European pricing will start at about $258,000 for the SLS AMG, which is inspired by the classic 300SL Gullwing and succeeds the SLR McLaren as Mercedes-Benz's performance flagship.
For the hefty price, aficionados will get a vehicle that sprints from zero to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds and has a top speed of 197 mph, courtesy of the front-/mid-mounted 6.2-liter V8 that drives the rear wheels through an AMG seven-speed dual-clutch automated manual gearbox/transaxle. The AMG-tuned engine makes 563 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque.
The new ultra-sports car gets an aluminum space frame and body and a sport chassis with aluminum double-wishbone suspension. Mercedes-Benz pegs the curb weight at 3,571 pounds.
The automaker says the SLS AMG delivers the equivalent of 18 mpg in the combined Euro driving cycle.
"The SLS AMG bolsters both the Mercedes-Benz and AMG brands equally and will surely become one of the most alluring sports cars of our time," said Dieter Zetsche, chairman of the board of management of Daimler AG and head of Mercedes-Benz Cars, in a prepared statement.
The automaker noted that the new SLS is a "harbinger of the design philosophy of future Mercedes-Benz sports cars."
Other details on the SLS AMG include push-button start, paddle shifters and 19-inch front and 20-inch rear light alloy wheels with 265/35ZR19 tires up front and 295/30ZR20s at the rear. It can be ordered in nine paint choices; Mercedes-Benz says the "highlight is the unique AMG Alubeam silver."
The cabin is patterned after aircraft construction, with air vents that have an adjustable set of nozzles. The silver dials have red pointers and a 220-mph scale. To customize the interior, Mercedes-Benz provides five leather color choices, including black, classic red, sand, porcelain and light brown.
The gullwing doors, the car's styling signature, swing up by 70 degrees. The automaker notes that the doors "require less room to open than do conventional coupe doors and can be completely opened in standard-size garages."
Standard equipment includes floor mats with the AMG logo, an electric parking brake, Parktronic, heated sport seats, sport pedals made of brushed stainless steel with rubber studs and a memory package with power-adjustable seating and steering wheel settings.
Options include carbon ceramic brakes, a Bang & Olufsen BeoSound AMG surround sound system, a six-disc DVD changer, a carbon hood, forged 10-spoke wheels and a performance sport steering wheel.
