Tokyo, Japan - Nissan Motor Company and its affiliate transmission supplier JATCO Limited have announced the joint development of a new generation of compact, lightweight continually variable transmissions (CVT).
The new design features an innovative structure combining conventional CVT belt operation with an auxiliary gearbox and a significantly increased gear ratio range. The new transmission is scheduled to appear in compact Nissan vehicles worldwide in the near future.
The new CVT features a 20 per cent higher ratio for enhanced responsiveness on starting and acceleration; a 10 per cent reduction in overall length and 13 per cent reduction in weight compared with conventional CVTs in its class; and Adaptive Shift Control, which automatically selects the best ratio for start-up, acceleration, and uphill or downhill driving.
“Nissan believes the CVT has very good potential as a leading technology for raising the fuel efficiency of international combustion engine systems,” said Shuichi Nishimura, corporate vice-president of Nissan Powertrain Engineering Division. “Nissan first began applying CVT technology in 1991 and has been continuously evolving CVTs, engine cooperative management and other systems, and expanding their use in Nissan vehicles. The need to improve fuel economy, with the resulting reductions in CO2 emissions, motivated us to step up our efforts in the joint development with JATCO of this next-generation CVT.”
JATCO offers a full line of CVTs for applications from mini-vehicles up to 3.5-litre V6 engines. The company produces 43 per cent of all CVTs made globally.

Rotary engines are the original hybrid. They burn gasoline and oil by design.

Les gains sont là, mais ça doit dépendre des véhicules sur lesquels c'est installé.
