GM offers big incentives to move Saturns

DETROIT -- In an effort to clear out the remaining Saturn inventory, General Motors Co. today began an incentive program that runs through the end of the month.
Consumers can get either $4,000 off of any 2008 or 2009 Saturn or 0 percent financing for 72 months.
“Since we’re not producing new cars, this is a way to give owners an incentive to get into a new Saturn product,” said John McDonald, a GM spokesman.
In addition, a loyalty mailing to current Saturn owners offers an additional $1,000 in cash. That’s regardless of whether they trade in their Saturn vehicle.
“They have to have owned or leased their Saturn vehicle for a minimum of six months to qualify,” McDonald says. “They get $1,000 cash, and that can be combined with other incentives.”
McDonald says Saturn has about 10,000 vehicles in inventory in the United States.
Last month GM announced it would be shutting down Saturn after an attempt to sell the brand to Penske Automotive Group fell through.
Some Saturn dealers say they have as much as five months worth of inventory on their lots. They say sales came to a halt in October upon news of the failed Penske deal.
Through the first nine months, U.S. sales for Saturn collapsed 62 percent from the same period of 2008, down to 60,216 vehicles.
